Branch Activities - Public Lecture Programme 2009-2010

The annual Public Lecture programme is unique to the Tayside & Fife Branch. The programme seeks to offer a varied and interesting series of talks by accomplished scientists in a range of disciplines.

The talks are held  in the D’Arcy Thompson (Tower) Lecture Theatre, University of Dundee, starting at 7.00pm (N.B. February 2010 talk in Kydd Building, University of Abertay Dundee). All talks are open to everyone, and attendance is free; the talks usually last about an hour, with some time for questions from the audience.

The Tayside & Fife Branch of the British Science Association are most grateful to the University of Dundee and to the University of Abertay Dundee for their contributions towards this lecture series.

Theme Days for Schools

The Branch organises occasional Theme Days for schools to take part in co-ordinated science activities, allowing senior pupils to explore further some topics they might not see so deeply in school.

A Theme Day on Mathematics is being held on 10th September 2009 at the University of Dundee.

Two Theme Days on Biology are being organised by the Scottish Crop Research Institute, Invergowrie, for November 2009. Senior pupils from many local schools attended these events last year, and all were very impressed by the science on display.

The Tayside & Fife Branch acknowledges the contribution of the SCRI staff and the Scottish Executive to these events.

If you have any suggestions for a future Theme Day topic, please contact the Chairman.

Discussion Events

The Branch organises occasional discussion events, allowing members of the public to discuss important science topics with experts in their field.

Our last rural Discussion Event of 2008 was The Future of Agriculture in Scotland over the Next 20 Years at Bell Baxter High School, Cupar, Fife, on Saturday 8th March.

A discussion event for National Science & Engineering Week in March 2010 is being planned.

The Tayside & Fife Branch acknowledges the Scottish Government for their contribution towards these discussion events.

About the British Science Association

The mission of the British Science Association is to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of science and technology in our lives today. The role of the Association is becoming increasingly important as more and more scientists and funding bodies appreciate the need to publicise the science which they perform (all the Research Councils now include public understanding of science activities within their remits). These publicity activities are of benefit to scientists themselves, as well as to the general public.

Events organised by the British Science Association include:

Visit the official British Science Association webpage for more information about the Association and its activities.

Anyone interested in science and the promotion of science to the public should join the British Science Association. Your membership is FREE and will bring you information about popular science activities, including:
